First of all, we'd like to pray for everyone that's in harm's way due to hurricane Matthew. Please pray this with us:
Dear Father, we pray that your angels surround and keep everyone safe from harm in the areas affected by hurricane Matthew. Cause Your church to rise up and help those in need in practical ways. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Our focus in Who is God? Part 3 has been on responsibilities, consequences, and rewards. Genesis establishes our priorities and responsibilities towards God, ourselves, our family, and our community. When we put God first, the rest of our lives fall into place. Let’s review what we've covered in this series so far.
God and Cain's conversation mirrors the discourse in the garden of Eden. 1.) The Inquiry 2.) The Judgement 3.) The Sentence 4.) The Banishment. This is why it is so important not to let our own hearts become hardened towards God because, at some point, He is forced to act as Judge. Anger and bitterness reaps cursings where blessings should grow.
There are two motivations to be someone’s keeper: obligation and love. Our motivation should be love. God’s motivation is always love.
God wanted Cain to own up to his actions. But, he wouldn’t admit that he sinned against the Lord. God always searches for repentance and when He finds it, He always mercifully forgives.
A World without God
God allowed Cain to live a life that reflected his priorities. Cain and his descendants were deceived into believing that God is a punishing God, lived by the law of the jungle, and spread the idolatry of self worship.
God is our role model of a good father. Key elements in good fathering include: involvement, unconditional love, knowing your children, guiding your children and helping your children achieve their destiny.
God is our Judge and only acts when the heart's so hardened that He has no choice.
God is our Keeper and His motivation to guard you from harm is love.
God is One Who forgives when He finds repentance.
God is merciful even in judgment.
God is our role model.
Our prayer for this season is Ephesians 5:1 Classic Amplified, “Therefore be imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father].”
May God richly bless you and keep you and your family safe.
