As a kid, I spent many happy hours scribbling over my very first storybook Bible. My brothers added a lot of red crayon to the crucifixion illustration to make it ‘historically accurate’. When my reading skills improved, my parents gave me a pink Precious Moments Bible which I used throughout my childhood. Even though Bible reading was part of our everyday routine, I viewed it as a chore because I didn’t realize its significance.
When I became a young adult, I personally realized the importance of reading the Bible everyday. It’s quiet time with God that allows me to fill myself with His Words and learn to recognize and hear His voice. It refuels you with spiritual energy so you can face whatever situation is presented you at any given time. It’s the #1 way to build your faith and it’s vital for your relationship with God. Proverbs 4:20-22 (NIV) “My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.”
If you struggle, as I did for many years, to read your Bible consistently, I’d like to recommend using a Bible app. There’s a variety out there on the Itunes store, but my app of choice is the You Version. I’ve done daily devotionals before, but it’s by far the most helpful aide I’ve found.
You can use it on your phone, tablet, or computer, and it’s completely free. Wherever you are, it’s available at your fingertips. There’s a wide variety of reading plans so you can read the whole Bible in a year, or focus on topics like relationships or finances. Reading bible apps with friends builds a sense of community and helps hold everyone accountable as well. One of my favorite features is the videos created by The Bible Project. They break down the books of the Bible and explain their historical and spiritual significance.
Just remember, these tools are there to help you succeed. Whatever works for you, be it reading out of a hardcover book or scrolling through your phone, use whatever helps you to study the Word the most.
If you use any Bible app or study plan that has helped you in your personal devotions, please let us know in the comments! We would love to hear from you and spread the word to others so they can benefit as well.
I hope these open letters have been a blessing to you.
