Genesis 19:36-38 NLT, ‘As a result, both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their own father. When the older daughter gave birth to a son, she named him Moab. He became the ancestor of the nation now known as the Moabites. When the younger daughter gave birth to a son, she named him Ben-ammi. He became the ancestor of the nation now known as the Ammonites.’
What did the angels tell Lot? “Run to the mountains.” What did Lot say to the angels? “Let me go to Zoar instead.” Zoar did not take kindly to Lot and his daughters. In fact, it appears they may have blamed them for the destruction of the neighboring cities. The word for afraid is the word ‘dread’ (1) or today we would say terrified. Lot and his daughters couldn’t get out of there fast enough.
As the angels instructed Lot in the first place, Lot and his daughters ended up in the mountains. Distraught, the older daughter considered the future of the family and faced several realizations. Can you put yourself in her place?
Dad is without a wife and we are without a mother.
We need to preserve the family line.
We have no home, possessions, or money.
We eat berries and roast animals caught in a trap.
Our home is a literal cave.
Dad is old and doesn’t have any sons.
We need to preserve the family line.
Dad is getting too old to produce seed.
We daughters have no man to protect us or keep us safe now or in our old age.
We must hide from the men of Zoar or they will kill us.
There are no other men for us to marry.
We need to preserve the family line or we will die out as a family, a culture, and as a people.
What will we do? What will we do? WHAT WILL WE DO????
Talk about despair!
Why were Lot's daughters so fixated on an heir? It would stand to reason that the women of Zoar found themselves in the same predicament. These girls may have heard at the water fountain how the women would get the men of the house drunk because their men were unwilling to have sex with them. Desperate, the women had to manipulate circumstances in order to get pregnant and continue the family line.
The women of Zoar were probably doubly terrified about perpetuating their lineage since all the men in the surrounding cities and towns were gone. Saturated with a culture where women must bring forth sons so the family line can continue, Lot's daughters saw their father as a means to an end. Knowing their father would never agree to such a thing, and since they were the only baby makers in the family, they probably felt there was no choice in the matter. As a matter of fact, one sister convinced the other that they were doing their father a favor.
Can you hear the wheels turning? ‘Hey, sister, let’s get seed from our father and the family line will continue. As daughters, we could preserve his legacy and our culture.’ What appears to be the most practical way, is not always the moral way. Following Lot’s logic of resolving a supernatural issue with alternative morality (Natural vs Supernatural), both daughters decided to use their father’s seed to produce heirs. The apples really didn't fall far from the tree.
If Lot had obeyed the two angels, maybe none of this would have happened. If they had just fled to the mountains like they were suppose to, perhaps Abraham would have sent his men to retrieve them. One can only speculate. This we know, when we change the plans of God who sent His angels to relay His message, the results can be devastating. God our Father knows all things. It is in our best interest to follow the commands of His angels sent to care for us.
Hebrews 1:14 NLT, ‘Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will: inherit salvation.’
This concludes our series, ‘Men and Angels’. We pray that it was a blessing to you. Next Tuesday, we will begin our new series on Genesis 20.
Father, You know all and You know best. I will listen to the commands of Your angels who are sent to care for me and ensure my salvation. In Jesus Name, Amen.
God knows best.
I will obey the command of God’s angels.
Do a study on the word salvation in Hebrews 1:14.
