When God created Adam and Eve, He created them equal. In fact, they were both called Adam until they sinned in the Garden of Eden. Sin activated the curse into effect. That’s when Adam changed his wife’s name to Eve and that’s when husbands began to domineer over the wives.
Jesus came to remove the curse and became the example of how to love. He gave up His deity to become human, making Himself our equal. Then, Jesus loved us so much, He elevated the Church by dying for us. We became ‘one body’ with Christ and possess all of the authority and divine benefits that Jesus possesses.
When Paul was writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he was telling husbands that in God’s eyes, they were ‘one’ with their wives. Women possessed all the divine benefits and authority that men possessed and that husbands and wives were now equals.
Galatians 3:28 NLT, ‘There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.’
Now that wives are equal with their husbands, husbands are to elevate their wives even more so by giving up their lives for them.
Simply put, there wasn’t anything that was more important to Jesus than His Church, not even His own life. Husbands are to follow Jesus’ example in this matter.
And that’s what love means in this verse.
