He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, though he is surrounded by light.
Daniel, a young man who was captured from Jerusalem, heard the King’s decree. He was concerned that he and his friends would also be killed along with the magicians. He knew that only God could tell him what the king dreamed about and give its interpretation. So, Daniel and his friends prayed that the dream would be revealed. That night, God gave Daniel the answer in a vision. Daniel described God's wisdom as the light that surrounded Him. The magicians had nothing but darkness.
Let's deconstruct this verse for today's blog.
He reveals deep and mysterious things
The word reveals is defined as 'discloses, exposes or uncovers deep and mysterious things' (1).
Mystery is defined as 'secret, concealed, disguised, unexplained, unexplored, or undisclosed things that are deep in layers of information and levels of complexity' (2).
and knows what lies hidden in darkness
Knows is defined as 'informs, teaches and communicates what is in the darkness' (3).
though He is surrounded by light.
The word light here means 'illumination and wisdom' (4). And the word surrounded actually means 'this light, which is wisdom, abides, dwells and lives in God' (5).
Let's paraphrase this verse:
When we ask God for answers, He reveals, discloses, exposes or uncovers to us those things that are mysterious and hidden from others. These mysteries that are hidden in secret, are deep in layers of information and levels of complexity. Light, illumination, and wisdom abides and dwells in God. As we abide in Him, God shares with us what He knows. He informs, teaches and communicates to us what is hidden in the darkness.
