Christmas carols resound here at Founded. Some of the most beautiful songs with the most touching messages ever written are Christmas songs. Allow me a little nostalgia if you will.
When my kids were little, I would arrange all of the pieces of the nativity under our tree, except for the statuettes of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus. Every day during Advent, Mary and Joseph trekked the length of the house until they arrived at their destination on Christmas Eve. Of course, on Christmas morning, Jesus emerged in His manger and we always had a cupcake or a cookie ready for Him. The big finale was all of us singing in one ruckus accord, Happy Birthday, Dear Jesus.
We still have that very same nativity set but Mary, Joseph and Jesus now remain situated for the entire Advent season and we no longer sing Happy Birthday. Hanging above the rest of the statuettes is our little angel, representing the multitude of angels that appeared the night of Jesus’ birth. Reading Luke 2, you will note that the angels sang praises of a different sort that holy night, “Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.”
Peace. This word does not only mean tranquility and restfulness or the elimination of conflicts. The word ‘peace’ in the Greek infers prosperity (1). Consider that the shepherds were Hebrews and the angels spoke to them in their native tongue. Peace or ‘shalom’ in the Hebrew is defined as completeness, soundness, health, welfare, and affectionate relationship with God (2).
Like Genesis 1, the earth was empty and dark and nothing filled the spiritual void in the hearts of people who searched for truth (On a Wing and a Prayer). The heavenly hosts were declaring words from the presence of God to humankind, “Success, prosperity, blessing, and affluence in the land (earth) and to all of its inhabitants (4).”
Not only did God grant peace on earth but also His good will towards men. What were the angels revealing? Good will is God’s great pleasure. It is His delight to share His Son with humankind (3).
Let’s paraphrase the lyrics to this beautiful and profound angelic chorus:
Glory to God in the Highest!
Peace and complete restoration of humankind’s relationship with God!
Peace and complete prosperity on the land.
Soundness, wholeness, health, welfare, and affluence in every area of life to all humankind.
It is God’s good will and pleasure to share His Son with you.
It is such a joy to share the Word of God with our readers. We here at Founded pray God’s peace and HIs good will over every area of your life. Remember, it is God’s good will and pleasure to share Jesus and all that He is with you!
Our next post will be after the holidays, Tuesday, January 3rd. Until then, Merry Christmas and a blessed and prosperous New Year!
